Quin Twins, Tegan and Sara Wrap Up Their Tour At The Tivoli

Canadian twins, Tegan and Sara wrapped up a six-month long tour at The Tivoli on Saturday night to an appreciative, excited and surprisingly well-behaved crowd. The gig was an all-age no alcohol affair which was a refreshing experience as it seemed to eliminate the usual annoying behaviour that can spoil a gig. Indeed it was the first time I have ever experienced someone ask if they were blocking another’s view of the stage.

Tegan and Sara opened the set with Dark Come Soon from the pair’s latest album The Con followed by the title track which received cheers of excitement from the crowd. The two-hour show included a good mix of songs such as, Back In Your Head, Floorplan, Burn Your Life Down, Like O Like H, Nineteen, Call It Off and some older favourites like Where Does The Good Go?, Speak Slow, Walking With A Ghost and Monday Monday Monday from previous albums So Jealous and If It Was You.

One thing that makes Tegan and Sara enjoyable to watch apart from their passionate performances is the audience interaction between songs. On this night, we got to hear about Sara’s adventures with an ‘Ice Bar’ in Sydney and what ‘a fucking stupid idea’ it was to pay to visit a bar that is cold, although 'it was fun at the time'. Indeed, a person visiting an Ice Bar who hails from a country that sees its fair share of ice is a little odd. Tegan, who did not want anything to do with the Ice Bar, spent most of the talk time humorously chastising her sibling on the effects of alcohol and how it impairs one’s decision making ability, fitting for a no alcohol event.

It was also the end of another tour for Kaki King who supported Tegan and Sara whilst they were in Australia. For those that don’t know, Kaki King is but a single woman who can make up entire musical compositions on the spot all with a guitar and some nifty loop backs. She no doubt, redefines the idea of a ‘one-woman band’. She also features on Tegan and Sara’s The Con.
